1. How do you feel about your college acceptance? It is shocking to say the least. However, I am extremely grateful for the help I’ve gotten from the ISA staff. Thanks to them I have been accepted into 6/7 art schools I applied too (which is a huge ego booster).

2. What was the most difficult aspect of your portfolio preparation? For me, personally, it was timing. I am a slow artist; I take my time no matter what. This was a huge problem for me as an art student because I couldn’t produce the necessary amount of works needed for my portfolio. However, that changed when I took KJ’s portfolio class. By the end of the summer before my senior year, I was able to create 12-15 new portfolio pieces.

3. When did you start the portfolio class, and how did you prepare your portfolio? I started the portfolio class in 2020 and started it with a theme. In my junior year of high school, I had a fixation on my dreams and used that to fuel my creative endeavors moving on. Slowly the theme evolved into the exploration of disassociation/maladaptive daydreaming and I was able to make a cohesive portfolio.

4. What is your favorite artwork that you made? My favorite piece out of my entire portfolio would be the sculpture I made out of foam and plaster.

5. Do you have any advice for the new portfolio students? Remember to have fun with it and talk to those around you. Just a simple conversation with your peers may help both of you jumpstart your creative juices! Also remember that the staff are there to advise you and your portfolio, they are there to help you!

6. Tell us your thoughts about the NYSA! We chose NYSA because it allowed their students to explore and develop their own concepts. Personally, I enjoyed that freedom and the staff supported my growth as an artist as well.
